Lindsay Bugbee Crosby ’08

In July, the Springfield College community was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Lindsay Bugbee Crosby ’08. Crosby gave birth to son Nolan on June 24, and on July 2 was rushed to Hartford Hospital where she was diagnosed with Strep A and sepsis. She passed away on July 4 surrounded by her family. She leaves her husband, Evan, and their three children, Finlay, 5, Sigrid, 3, and newborn Nolan. 

The daughter of Jane Bugbee and Keith Bugbee, head men’s lacrosse coach at Springfield College for the past 35 years, Lindsay most recently served as the associate director of admission and girl’s lacrosse coach at the Westminster School in Simsbury, Conn., where Evan also serves as the associate director of leadership gifts.

A former standout student-athlete at Springfield College, Lindsay was a member of the women’s lacrosse team and the women’s soccer team. She was a two-time winner of the Springfield College Female Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year recognition.

Jane Seaver Kirk, G’56, Munsonville, N.H., May 22, 2018. Jane attended Duke University and, upon graduation, began an international career with the American Red Cross and, later, the YMCA. In 1972, Jane became the Executive Director for YWCA for the City of New York, but later returned to the YMCA, living in Boston and Chicago. She retired from the Y in 1993 following a successful term as an executive fundraiser. In her retirement, she volunteered and travelled. She was interested in helping children who were homeless or whose parents were incarcerated, and began a program with the Rotary Club of Keene, N.H., that became known as Jane’s Kids. She received the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Mary T. Scibelli ’95, Springfield, Mass., July 22, 2018. Mary worked for more than 20 years as an administrative assistant at Springfield College. 

Phyllis E. Giannetti Bilton, Agawam, Mass., July 28, 2018. She was a representative for Hallmark Cards. In retirement, she worked at Dunkin’ Donuts on the Springfield College campus. 

ALUMNI

Gerald J. Weiss ’50, PhD, Owing Mills, Md., April 12, 2018. A veteran of World War II, Weiss received a PhD in pulmonary physiology, was director of the pulmonary and respiratory department at Newark (N.J.) Beth Israel Medical Center, and was a pioneer who ran the heart-lung machine during the first years of cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. 

David Auxter ’51, G’56, EdD, King George, Va., Sept. 4, 2018. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He earned his doctorate from Boston University and spent most of his career teaching Adapted Physical Education at Slippery Rock University. He spent his retirement in Washington, continuing his lifelong work as an advocate for people with disabilities.

Clifford B. Burkett Jr. ’52, Rockland, Maine, Sept. 25, 2017. Burkett joined the army and was stationed in Japan after the war. He was a teacher, school principal, and coached basketball and other sports in Washburn, Maine, and Fort Kent, Maine, and retired as principal from Rockland High School. His wife, Larraine, wrote to say that “he was very proud to say he graduated from Springfield College.” He was father to Stephen Burkett ’76.

Charles J. Butt ’53, G’56, South Harpswell, Maine, Sept. 14, 2018. Born in Shanghai, China, he established a high record of all round athletic achievement at the Foreign YMCA of Shanghai. At Springfield, he was an All-American soccer player, captain of the swimming and tennis teams, and a member of the national championship volleyball team. He coached swimming at Springfield for four years, and undertook graduate study at Columbia University Teachers College in 1956 and 1957. He became head coach for men’s and women’s swimming and men’s soccer at Bowdoin College. He received many honors and accolades, and is an inductee in the Bowdoin College Athletic Hall of Honor, the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame, and the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was chairman of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Committee, traveled to manage the US Swimming Team during the ’77 World University Games in Sofia, Bulgaria, served as chairman of the World University Games Committee in Romania and Mexico City, was a multiyear member of the Olympic Swimming Committee, and he managed the World Swimming Team at the ’01 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.

Paul Robertson Eastman ’53, G’57, Concord, N.H., July 29, 2018. He was a seventh-generation descendant of Ebenezer Eastman, the first settler of Concord. In high school and college, he was an outstanding baseball pitcher. Following two years of army service as a lieutenant, he earned a master’s degree from Springfield College, and then began a 29-year career in Amityville, N.Y. schools, where he coached a total of 80 squads in baseball, wrestling, and soccer.

Eugene P. Krygowski ’54, Hartford, Conn., April 9, 2018. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, deploying to Orleans, France. Gene met his wife, Maryellen Visconti, in college and they married in 1955. He attended Tufts University Dental School, and then began Dental Associates group dental practice in Farmington, Conn. 

Col. Robert B. Mason ’55, U.S. Marine Corps, Ret., Fairfax, Va., Aug. 9, 2018. He was commissioned second lieutenant upon graduation and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-1983. His decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, Korean Defense Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He was a marathon runner and had two knee replacements to prove it.

Paul M. Bean ’56, South Yarmouth, Mass., Aug. 21, 2018. Bean coached and taught physical education at Melrose (Mass.) High School for 30 years and was inducted into the Melrose Athletic Hall of Fame. He spent summers working on Cape Cod. He was a familiar sight at Sugarloaf in Maine, where he skied from 1958 until just before his 82nd birthday.

George Hunter ’56, Glenwood Springs, Colo., Dec. 12, 2017. Hunter was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, and taught school and coached sports in Washington, D.C., and Idaho Springs and Steamboat Springs, both in Colorado. He was a member of charter faculty at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, and was a professor of recreation management. He was a Professional Ski Instructors of America instructor for more than 40 years.

Charles W. Jordan ’56, Bangor, Maine, Feb. 17, 2018. Jordan served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the State of Maine, Maine Central Railroad, and was a driver’s education instructor. He was a co-founder of the Pink Socks Foundation, an organization to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Francis Ball ’57, Melrose, Mass., Dec. 15, 2017. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He taught in Bethesda, Md., The Hotchkiss School, Salisbury, Conn., and then Melrose High School where he was a physical education teacher and wrestling, football and track coach for more than 30 years. He was an inductee to the Melrose High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts Wrestling Hall of Fame. Ball earned a master’s degree from Boston University. 

Najim Din Abdullah Abdul Jabbar ’57, G’62, PhD, Northport, N.Y., Oct. 19, 2018. He came to Springfield from Iraq to pursue his passion for gymnastics, returning home to teach gymnastics at the University of Baghdad. He earned a PhD from Vanderbilt University, and moved to Northport, where, as a teacher, he introduced gymnastics and soccer to the curriculum. He then became a professor at the City University of New York at Staten Island until his retirement. 

James Robert Curran ’58, G’59, Berlin, Md., April 8, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked at ABA, Humro, Hadron, AIR, University Research Corp, and Spectrum.

Richard Hungerford ’58, Little River, S.C., Sept. 8, 2018. He was brother to Charles Hungerford ’54.

Janice Hamm Litchard ’58, Westminster, Colo., Aug. 18, 2018. In 1956, she married Robert Litchard ’57. They spent many years at Brown University and Cornell University before moving to Colorado in 1980 where Robert was vice president of the University of Colorado Foundation. She was known for her love for family.

Edward Charles Shultz ’59, New Haven, Conn., Dec. 15, 2015. Shultz was a U.S. Marine Corps first lieutenant and served in the Korean War. He was employed at Federal Paperboard Company and later at Simkins Industries Inc. before retirement in 1998. He was a coach in the Hamden Father’s Baseball League, organizer and president of the Hamden High School Parent Track Club, and a member and spotter with the Hamden High School Gridiron Club. His work in the area of youth sports and on behalf of veterans earned him honors from his community. He was married to Patricia Branagan Shultz ’59.

Werner J. Kleemann ’63, West Henrietta, N.Y., April 4, 2018. While at Springfield College, he played and coached football. He was promoted to lance corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1960. His education career began in Ilion, N.Y. He then became a University of Buffalo defensive line coach. In 1971, he joined Rush Henrietta Central School District, where he was coach, teacher, athletic director, principal, mentor, and friend for more than 30 years. 

Winston C. Hatt ’65, Mansfield, Texas, March 26, 2018. He taught physical education at Gates Chili and East Rochester for 32 years. He was an outstanding athlete at Webster High School and he continued to be a successful coach who was best known for his cross country teams.

Kenneth H. Wood ’65, Westhampton, Mass., Sept. 17, 2018. He was an elementary school teacher for two years in Belchertown before moving to the Northampton public schools, retiring in 2001. Sports played a major role in Wood’s life. He played baseball and moved up through high school, college intramurals, American Legion Post 224, and Tri County teams. For more than 40 years, he played slow pitch softball in Easthampton and Northampton as a second baseman and a pitcher. His love of baseball and softball led him into umpiring for many years. His son, Kevin ’02, G’06, is an associate director of athletics at Springfield College.

Tobias “Toby” J. Barboza IV ’68, Paterson, N.J., May 31, 2018. Barboza served in the U. S. Army from 1969-1971, before getting his master’s degree in athletic training. His career began when he started the athletic training program at William Paterson University in New Jersey, and continued as an adjunct professor following his 2011 retirement. He was a member of the N.J. Athletic Trainer’s Association.

Richard J. Wiedl ’68, Oxford, Conn., Aug. 8, 2018. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. He was head football and wrestling coach at Foran High School, an assistant football coach at Yale University, and assistant athletic trainer for wrestling at the 1976 Olympics. He taught physical education, general science, and biology in the Milford Public School System until his retirement.

Paul B. Ranslow, G’72, Lincoln, Calif., April 9, 2018. Ranslow’s career in higher education included roles as director of admission at Pacific University, interim president of Pitzer College, as president of Ripon College, and later as president of Sierra Nevada College.

Carlton L. Snitkin ’72, G’78, Norwich, Conn., May 11, 2018. Snitkin was a U.S. Army veteran and legendary Norwich Free Academy physical education teacher who created the school’s wrestling program and served as championship-winning head coach until his retirement. Snitkin was recognized with numerous coach-of-the-year honors and is inducted in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Rita Katie Guglielmo ’73, G’74, St. Petersburg, Fla., Aug. 1, 2018. She was a singer and piano player and circled the world many times as a cruise ship entertainer.

Vincent Altebrando ’88, Stony Brook, N.Y., April 20, 2018. Altebrando was a physical education teacher and wrestling coach at Walt Whitman High School, Huntington Station, N.Y., and a mentor, friend, motivator, and a role model for many students. As coach, he earned 213 dual-meet wins and three league titles.

Ann Bailey Leavenworth ’90, Springfield, Mass., July 27, 2018. She was dedicated to social justice and community activism and proud to promote civil liberty and help the impoverished. 

Kristina M. Krull ’16, Leicester, Mass., July 21, 2018. She earned a master’s degree in exercise and sports science from Merrimack College, Andover, Mass., and was a Penn Fellow and a teaching assistant in the chemistry department at St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., where she also was an assistant coach of the girls’ ice and field hockey teams. She was working on a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Education.
